The DEC VT320 was a text terminal built by Digital Equipment Corporation in the late 1980s. Its character set was drawn on a non-rectangular pixel grid, stretched horizontally by the electron beam scanning across the CRT. Peter Hull used one through college, and years later he wrote a Python script that recreated how that beam actually hit the phosphor, how the glow bled sideways across adjacent pixels. He drew the result into a 1:1 grid and ran it through FontForge to produce vector outlines. That process is VT323. The font ships as a single weight with 568 characters covering Basic Latin, Latin-1 Supplement, Latin Extended-A, Vietnamese diacritics, combining marks, currency symbols, mathematical operators, and fi/fl ligatures.
