Microsoft built Cascadia Code and Windows Terminal at the same time. The font was drawn by Aaron Bell at Saja Typeworks during 2018 and 2019, shaped by what the terminal team needed on screen: a monospace with programming ligatures that merge operators like => and != into single glyphs, and variable weights from ExtraLight (200) to Bold (700). Powerline symbols are baked into dedicated PL variants so developers skip the patching step. The family ships in four versions. Cascadia Code carries the ligatures. Cascadia Mono strips them out for developers who find ligatures distracting. Both come in standard and PL builds, where PL adds the Powerline glyphs for decorated terminal prompts.
