OCR-A BT Font Free Download TTF, OTF, WOFF, WOFF2

OCR-A was not drawn for people. American Type Founders designed it in 1966 so that optical character recognition scanners could read printed text off bank cheques, credit card slips, and business forms. Each glyph follows a strict geometry set by the U.S. Bureau of Standards: thick, simplified strokes with exaggerated distinctions between characters that machines might confuse (the 8 and the B, the 0 and the O, the 1 and the I). The design was standardized as ANSI X3.17-1981 and adopted internationally as ISO 1073-1:1976. OCR-A BT is Bitstream's digital cut of that standard, a single-weight monospace covering Basic Latin, and it is available here as a free download for personal use in TTF, WOFF, and WOFF2 formats. The same ugliness that makes it hard to read at body-text sizes is what makes it useful now in a second life: graphic designers pull it for tech branding, sci-fi interfaces, passport and ID card mockups, and anything that needs to signal "machine-processed." It shows up in TV subtitle overlays (Blacklist) and sits in MoMA's permanent collection. Set it large, where the rigid geometry reads as intentional. For an OCR face with better human readability, look at OCR-B, Adrian Frutiger's 1968 redesign of the same concept. For general-purpose coding monospace options, see Fira Code or Inconsolata .
