The small strokes at the end of a letterform "the serifs" are the oldest structural feature in Latin typography. They trace back to Roman stone carving, where the mason's chisel left tapered finishing strokes at the terminals of each letter. Every serif font inherits that structural logic, whether it was drawn in the fifteenth century or released last year. The category is enormous, covering everything from the delicate hairlines of a Didone to the heavy bracketed slabs of a newspaper headline face, but every member shares the same defining trait: finishing strokes that guide the eye from one letter to the next along a horizontal baseline.

That horizontal pull is why serif fonts have dominated long-form reading for five hundred years. The serifs create a visual rail that helps the reader track across a line of text without losing their place, which is the reason book publishers, newspaper editors, and legal document templates still default to a serif for body copy. On screen, improvements in display resolution and font rendering have closed the old gap between serif and sans-serif legibility, making serif typefaces a practical choice for web body text, editorial sites, and digital publications where they once felt blurry or cramped.
